Dealing with Disappointment
Last week we were excited to announce our thirty-six prefects for Term 4 2020 and 2021, and while for some it was cause for celebration, for others there was disappointment. Our current Year 11 girls have demonstrated their leadership through a variety of avenues; through their co-curricular activities, through service, in the classroom and through interactions with others across the School and in their communities. There are other formal positions of leadership yet to be determined, yet with so much depth to the leadership capabilities of the cohort, not all will be awarded formal leadership positions.
How can you help your daughter cope with disappointment?
- Help her identify the emotions she feels and to express them in an acceptable way
- Give her the opportunity to talk without jumping in with explanations, excuses or solutions
- Celebrate the fact that she put herself forward, her attributes, and the contributions she has made
- Young people watch how adults respond, and we need to model graciousness when we experience disappointment
- Encourage your daughter to do something that regularly gives her pleasure, such as engaging in hobbies, going for a walk or listening to relaxing music.
