Our Pre-Prep program aims to instil a curiosity and love of learning in all children through a play-based inquiry approach.

The Somerville House Pre-Prep Program is a full-time, co-educational, Queensland Government Approved Kindergarten Program based at the Somerville House campus in South Brisbane.

Our Early Learning Centre is a purpose built, state-of-the-art facility providing separate indoor and outdoor learning areas and extended hours care programs exclusively for Pre-Prep students and is available 50 weeks per year. All programs of the Early Learning Centre are approved for Child Care Subsidy (CCS).

The Somerville House Pre-Prep Program will encourage your child to LEAP as they Learn, Engage, Achieve and Play in a safe, nurturing and stimulating environment.

Learn

The Pre-Prep Program and facilities focus on the educational needs of children and are developed around the latest pedagogy in Pre-Prep learning. 

Central to the Pre-Prep program are pre-literacy and pre-numeracy development, and instilling students with a love and curiosity of learning. 

Somerville House Pre-Prep students are educated by experienced, Bachelor qualified Early Childhood Teachers and supported by Diploma qualified Early Childhood Educators.

Engage

The Pre-Prep program is flexible and consists of a broad range of engaging learning experiences such as:

  • Promotion and development of social and personal interactions
  • Group times focused on pre-literacy and pre-numeracy development 
  • Indoor and outdoor play-based activities
  • Gross and fine motor activities incorporating developmental motor screening
  • Technology play including early years coding
  • Lessons in Music, Visual Art, Christian Education, and Physical Education.
Achieve

The students will develop personal readiness for formal schooling, they will:

  • Learn to skilfully communicate their ideas, feelings and needs
  • Acquire skills to make new friends and cooperate with others
  • Gain independence and confidence in their abilities 
  • Learn to persevere and complete tasks.

The Pre-Prep program develops curiosity to enquire, observation to wonder and communication skill to share information. Across the year, students will explore topics such as personal and family identity, environmental care, sustainability, cultural understanding, diversity, indigenous perspectives, mindfulness, relaxation, health and safety and transition to school.

Play

Teachers and students collaborate to plan, think and extend learning through play. When children are playing, they are:

  • Learning to represent their ideas in a variety of forms – talking about their thoughts, constructing, painting, building, drawing and taking on roles 
  • Developing social skills – communicating, caring, negotiating, cooperating and sharing 
  • Engaging with the perspectives of others as they negotiate roles and solve problems
  • Building foundations for early literacy and numeracy through use of symbols, objects and materials 
  • Accessing and applying knowledge through exploration and re-creation of familiar events 
  • Acquiring new knowledge about themselves and their world as they play with others and interact with their environment.

Enrolment

Somerville House Pre-Prep is open to girls and boys turning four before 30 June of their entry year.

Application Process

Step 1

Complete the Application for Registration Form. All applications require a non-refundable fee of $350 per student.

Step 2

Approximately three years prior to your child's expected start date, you will be invited to complete an Application for Enrolment. Additional required documentation will also be requested at this time. 

The completion of the Application for Enrolment Form does not guarantee acceptance of your child’s enrolment.  

Step 3

Upon receipt of your completed Application for Enrolment form, you and your child will be invited to attend a tour of the Early Learning Centre and meet with the Director of Pre-Prep.

Places are only offered after the tour process is complete and at the discretion of the School.

Step 4

Upon receipt of an offer of enrolment, you will be required to confirm your acceptance by signing the official Agreement with the School and paying a non-refundable acceptance fee of $1,200. 

At the commencement of Term 3 in the year before entry, a confirmation fee of $3,000 must be paid and will be credited to the first fee instalment in the entry year. 

Step 5

Before starting Pre-Prep, families will be invited to a number of orientation events hosted by the Early Learning Centre.
