Somerville House Founder Miss Eliza Fewings and following Principals Misses Constance Harker and Marjorie Jarrett had a vision for our School: “it was to be a place of accomplishment, where academic achievement was valued, in an environment of respect, social grace and cooperative aspiration”.
Across the grounds of Somerville House, the spirit of these pioneers in Misses Fewings, Harker, and Jarrett, remains a powerful reminder for students to take hold of the opportunities life presents and to have a positive influence on society.
As we celebrate this milestone year for Somerville House, we are presented with a unique opportunity; to craft a lasting tribute to our students' beginnings, a tangible reminder of the evolution of our school.
The Somerville House Foundation and Old Girls’ Association has commissioned renowned sculptor and Old Girl, Dr. Rhyl Hinwood AM CF (Class of 1957) to create three bronze statues that will immortalise the Founders of Somerville House, Misses Eliza Fewings, Constance Harker, and Marjorie Jarrett.
To be unveiled on the Fewings Lawn on Commemoration Day, Friday 4 October, we invite you to contribute to these remarkable symbols of female empowerment. Help us honour the extraordinary legacy of Misses Fewings, Harker and Jarrett.
The Foundation is pleased to announce that we have received $280,000 in leadership gifts towards the 125th Anniversary Artworks, bringing us closer to our total goal of $400,000.
A donation in support of this gift presents an opportunity to be openly recognised at our School. All gifts to Somerville House will be publicly acknowledged (unless the donor requests anonymity) in the Foundation’s 2024 Impact Report and Connections Magazine. Gifts over $20,000 will see donors recognised on a plaque in the vicinity of the sculptures. Donations may be made as an outright gift of any amount, or through a gift that is pledged over 2 to 4 years. *Minimum gift of $5,000 per year applies. All gifts are fully tax deductible.
We are pleased to extend an invitation to our entire community to find out more about our three founding pioneers and the creative process Dr Hinwood is completing to create these masterpieces.
Join us on the evening of Monday 22 July where we will explore the making of the 125th Anniversary Artworks. Whilst there is no charge to attend this event, RSVP’s are essential. Students are also welcome to attend.
