Fewings Building Commemorative Bricks
‘Fewings Building’ Bricks
The Principal’s patience has been tested in recent weeks, as I have been patiently waiting to view the commemorative bricks installed as part of the Fewings Building refurbishment. It was a joy to take a tour of the classrooms and manage a glimpse of the commemorative bricks installed around the Fewings Lawn.
These commemorative walls honour our ‘Foundation Students’, being the first 224 pupils enrolled at the School between 1899 and 1909. The “Educational Block” was their primary residence of learning, known today as “A” Block – and about to be renamed and dedicated as the “Fewings Building”.
The commemorative walls enhance the Heritage Heart as a truly historic and unique part of the School.
Then of course, there are also the named, stainless-steel bricks, purchased by many parents for the Somerville House Foundation’s Building Tomorrow Together campaign. These bricks feature the names of enrolled students, current students and Old Girls and will be displayed on distinct walls in the new Senior School Precinct.
The plan is for family ties to be captured on one wall, the Family Tree Wall, while individuals will be celebrated on another, known as the Trailblazers’ Wall. The Service Wall will celebrate those who have held service roles or achieved outstanding accolades within our community: our teachers, captains, prefects, duces, etc. Some families and individuals with special connections to the School have also chosen to purchase a Commemorative Plaque.
I acknowledge the planning and collaboration of our Foundation Team, Ms Gilmore and Ms Tudehope, who have worked tirelessly to help create this campaign, which enables so many past and present students to celebrate their connection to Somerville House.

Staff Updates
After 18 years of service to Somerville House, Mrs Gaye Ryan (Assistant Head of Junior School – Teaching & Learning) has advised of her retirement at the end of 2022. Throughout the effects of COVID-19, we acknowledge Mrs Ryan’s contribution and approach to getting things done. This in turn helped drive the inclusive learning experience for Junior School students in the remote classroom environment. On behalf of all families and colleagues, we thank Mrs Ryan for her service to teaching in the Junior School since 2005.
