Co-Curricular Life and Strategic Priorities
Students who flourish have a balance in their life through participation in academic studies, music, cultural and sports activities. At Somerville House, the provision of co-curricular opportunities is about developing the whole student, while also catering to different student interests. Through the years, I have met many girls and young women who develop their confidence in playing a musical instrument or excelling in sport and inevitably, that confidence then transfers to other areas of their life.
Our strategic pillar “Sustaining Personal Growth” clearly articulates the goal of engaging co-curricular participation and performance. To achieve this goal, we want to help students improve their confidence through high levels of participation in sport, music, performing arts and cultural activities. In terms of the sporting opportunities, students are involved for a number of reasons. When I speak to students about their reason for taking up a new sport, they tell me it is for fun, while others say it is about staying fit and then there are those who play sport for the thrill of serious competition. I hold the view that it is important for students to participate at the level of their choice.
Excitement is growing with the progress of SomerFields. Our sporting facility is scheduled for completion mid-year, ready for our students to enjoy from Semester 2. We are looking forward to providing students the chance to enjoy sport while training with expert coaches in state-of-the-art facilities. Here is some visual progress of SomerField photos, and despite the overcast day, we all share great enthusiasm for the significant milestones that have been reached.

What about the historic performance of our 2023 Andrews Cup Swimming Champions!!!!! There were so many highlights on the day, including 1st Place overall, many individual 1st place events, 5 x 1st place in the relay events, with five championship records. Our Junior School swimmers swam with such outstanding effort and we are so proud of them! Congratulations to Director of Swimming, Mr Tim Lane and all Swimming Coaches.
The first round of QGSSSA Autumn fixtures were played last Friday night and I was thrilled to cheer on the Opens Basketball Team with their win against Ipswich Girls Grammar School. Congratulations to all QG teams who played on Friday evening. I was so impressed by their skill level and understanding of good sports-person-ship.
