Somerville House Foundation Overseas Study Scholarship 2018

Year 12 students of Somerville House wishing to study or contribute to a community project overseas throughout 2018 are invited to apply for the Somerville House Foundation Overseas Study Scholarship. The Foundation scholarship provides a contribution of up to AU$10,000 to be applied towards an overseas study experience.

Applications are open now, and will close at 4:00pm on Friday 25 August 2017.

The scholarship is intended to contribute to the recipient’s academic and personal development through their study at an overseas educational institution or participation in an overseas community project. It is designed to support a student who can clearly demonstrate how their proposed overseas study experience will benefit their development.

Acceptance of the scholarship indicates the recipient’s willingness to contribute to the Somerville House community upon their return by sharing their experiences and benefits of the scholarship with the extended School community.

Please note that funding for the overseas study experience will be provided upfront to the successful applicant, with evidence of completion to be sought at a later time.

Eligibility Criteria

In order to apply for the scholarship, the Somerville House student must be:

  • An Australian citizen or permanent resident
  • Currently studying in Year 12
  • Willing to contribute to the School community and share their experiences upon their return.  

Eligible Activities

The overseas study experiences eligible to be funded include, but are not limited to:

  • Semester or longer exchanges at universities, tertiary institutions or schools
  • Language programs at recognised institutions
  • Short courses or Summer/Winter programs at universities, language schools or technical education institutions abroad
  • Study tours that spend time at a school
  • Homestay programs that also involve interaction with a school in some way
  • An approved community aid project.

Students are not eligible to apply for the scholarship if their proposed overseas activity has not been adequately researched.

Award Criteria

General
The scholarship will be awarded based on merit. This includes consideration of the applicant’s:

  • Academic merit
  • Continuous involvement in the wider School Program
  • Potential to give back to the School Community.

Specific
The successful recipient will also be able to demonstrate:

  • Good character and leadership qualities
  • A high level of integrity, honesty and conscientiousness
  • How the overseas study experience will specifically contribute towards their academic and personal development
  • An ability to adapt to a different culture and to manage emotions (away from family, pets, friends, food).

Application Process

Applicants are required to email the following information to foundation@somerville.qld.edu.au by 4:00pm on Friday 25 August 2017:

  1. Completed application form 
  2. A personal statement (500 words) detailing why they are the best candidate for the scholarship, specifically addressing the following:
    • Insight into what they are like as a person (ie. their personality, relationships with others, values and interests)
    • Examples of previous activities that demonstrate their capacity to undertake an overseas study experience and how it will contribute to their future
    • What they believe to epitomise the all-round qualities and values typical of the Somerville House tradition
    • How they will contribute and give back to the School community
  3. A copy of a transcript or scanned copy of their most recent semester report
  4. Recent photograph.

Assessment Process

The assessment process will include:

  • Applicants will receive confirmation that their application has been received
  • Once the application deadline has passed, applications will be assessed by the Principal or the Principal’s delegate, the Head of Senior School and a Foundation Board Director (the Panel)
  • Applicants will be shortlisted and shortlisted applicants will be interviewed by the Panel. The Foundation Board and the Principal will consider recommendations from the Panel and will then make a final determination 

The successful applicant will be announced by the Principal at a School Assembly.

The Overseas Scholarship is an initiative of our Somerville House Foundation and is awarded on an annual basis.
