Our Junior School Sports program provides girls with opportunities to develop leadership, teamwork, and sportsmanship. Students from Years 2 to 6 compete in the Andrews Cup competition, participating in sports such as:

Senior School Sports

Students in Years 7 to 12 compete in various competitions, including:

Individual Sports Information

The AFL program has attracted over 120 students from Years 5–12 for the 2024/25 season. Our Junior AFL (Years 7–9) takes place in Term 3, while Senior AFL (Years 10-12) is held in Term 1. Students enjoy participating in the QGSSSA competition, which provides a safe and educational environment for skill development. For younger students, the Junior School also takes part in the Andrews Cup competition in Term 3 — a fantastic opportunity to learn the game and build foundational skills.

Athletics is a core sport at Somerville House, with students participating in various track and field events. Training and competitions are held throughout the year.

Badminton is available for students in Years 7 to 12, with opportunities to compete in interschool competitions and develop skills through regular training sessions.

Basketball is offered from Years 4 to 12, with strong participation across all year levels. Students in Years 4 to 6 compete in the Andrews Cup competition during Terms 3 and 4, providing a fun and social introduction to the sport. For Years 7 to 12, basketball is played through the QGSSSA competition, focusing on development, an approach that has delivered excellent results over the past five years. Junior and Senior squads also can compete in the statewide Champion Basketball School of Queensland (CBSQ) knockout competition. Individual players may nominate for Queensland State Secondary School representative teams, offering further pathways for talented athletes.

Cricket is available for students in Years 7 to 12, providing opportunities to develop skills and compete in local competitions.

Cross Country is a popular sport at Somerville House, with students participating in training and competitions throughout the year.

Equestrian is offered to students with a passion for horse riding, providing opportunities to compete in local and regional events.

Football (Soccer) is available for students in Years 7 to 12, with teams competing in local and regional competitions.

Gymnastics is offered to students from Pre-Prep to Year 12, with opportunities to develop skills and compete in local competitions.

Hockey is available for students in Years 7 to 12, providing opportunities to develop skills and compete in local competitions.

Netball is a popular sport at Somerville House, with teams competing in local and regional competitions. Training focuses on skill development and teamwork.

Rowing is offered to students in Years 8 to 12, with opportunities to compete in local and regional competitions.

Softball is available for students in Years 7 to 12, providing opportunities to develop skills and compete in local competitions.

Swimming is a core sport at Somerville House, with students participating in training and competitions throughout the year.

Tennis is offered to students from Pre-Prep to Year 12, with opportunities to develop skills and compete in local competitions.

Touch Football is available for students in Years 7 to 12, with teams competing in local and regional competitions.

Volleyball is offered to students in Years 7 to 12, with teams competing in local and regional competitions.

Water Polo is a growing sport at Somerville House, with students participating in training and competitions throughout the year.

Senior School students can also participate in district and regional sports pathways, leading to national representation. Additional competitions include:

  • Schools Cup Volleyball

Somerville House offers a full athletic development program that supports students in athletic goals from year 3-12. Strength and Conditioning guides warm-up, strength, power, injury prevention and talent identification programs. Strength and Conditioning supports the PE curriculum by working on these specific programs within classes from Years 3 to 12.

All competitive athletes have access to 1-2 tailored gym sessions per week, year-round. This initiative aims to support the students with busy training and study loads.

The Strength and Conditioning Coaches work closely with Head Coaches to develop our sports and ensures that programs are being delivered collaboratively with the students’ best interest at heart.

The Strength and Conditioning sessions complement the sports training schedules to enhance all aspects of athletic development including strength, power, speed, agility, aerobic fitness and injury prevention.

Somerville House encourages students to participate in club sports and other activities to complement their academic and co-curricular programs. These activities include:

  • AUSKick (PP-4)
  • Private Tennis lessons (P-12)
  • Gymnastics Club (P-12)
  • Swimming and Athletics Club training (dependent on ability/age)
