The Somerville House Foundation’s 2024 Annual Giving Appeal captures the essence of the Somerville House spirit as we celebrate 125 years of educating, inspiring and empowering students.
This year, our community is invited to come together to support two key areas:
- The 125th Anniversary Artworks being presented as a gift to the School on Commemoration Day this year.
- Our Towards 2030 scholarship appeal, where we seek to raise sufficient funds to establish new Foundation-funded scholarships for deserving students from 2030 onwards.
Participation in the Annual Giving Appeal is an indicator of our community’s shared commitment to the success and sustainability of Somerville House. Whether you give $50 or $5,000, know that your gift has an immediate and meaningful impact on our student’s daily experience.
As we approach Somerville House’s 125th Anniversary in 2024, we are presented with a unique opportunity; to craft a lasting tribute to our students’ beginnings, a tangible reminder of the evolution of our School.
Renowned sculptor and distinguished Old Girl, Dr Rhyl Hinwood AM CF (Class of 1957), has been commissioned by the Somerville House Foundation and Old Girls’ Association, to create three bronze sculptures that will immortalise the Founding Pioneers of Somerville House - Misses Eliza Fewings, Constance Harker, and Marjorie Jarrett.
To be positioned on the Fewings Lawn, these sculptures embody more than just the origin of our narrative; they symbolise the decades of Old Girls who have entered society as catalysts for positive change and leaders in their field. These artworks serve as a reminder to students of their eternal belonging to a distinctive fellowship, and will elevate their aspirations as they walk past them daily.
The Somerville House Foundation extends a warm invitation to our community to join us in this transformative endeavour, where art becomes a bridge connecting preservation, learning and culture. To be presented to the School on Commemoration Day on 4 October 2024, this gift to the School will be a partnership of the Foundation, Old Girls’ Association, Parents, Staff and Friends.
Since the establishment of the Scholarship and Bursary Fund in 2003, the Somerville House Foundation has generously provided $1.4 million in scholarships, enriching the educational journeys of 37 deserving students. Today, the Foundation's scholarships are exclusively means-tested, ensuring that financial assistance is directed towards students who face economic challenges, thereby continuing our commitment to making exceptional education accessible.
This year, the Foundation has launched our new six-year scholarship campaign, “Towards 2030”. Our goal is to raise sufficient funds to sustain the existing five Foundation-funded scholarships currently in place, and to create at least two new scholarships by 2030: one for a day girl and one for a boarder.
Your support of the Somerville House Scholarship fund helps to remove the barrier of financial disadvantage and to open up a world of opportunity for bright, talented, deserving girls.
