Middle School

Overview

DrWilliamson.jpgThe Middle School at Somerville House provides a learning environment that is relevant and enriching. Students are challenged by a variety of appropriate learning experiences, by setting high standards and by providing opportunities for them to be responsible and accountable for their learning.

By laying strong foundations in a well-balanced curriculum that emphasises literacy, numeracy, citizenship and ethics, and by creating an atmosphere that promotes positive self-concept, students are encouraged to become more confident, enthusiastic and successful learners.

Moreover, Christian perspectives provide the framework within which teachers endeavour to develop and maintain meaningful relationships with students by modelling feelings of care and respect, fairness, safety, trustworthiness and humour.

Within an environment that fosters a sense of belonging, stability and happiness, Middle School programs assist with the smooth transition from the Junior School to the Senior School. Whilst developing the unique nature of the Middle School at Somerville House, there is recognition that it is one part of the whole School.

This unity is facilitated by a shared mission; a seamless and sequential curriculum, including co-curricular activities; and a pastoral care program that brings together the School community. The regular celebration and recognition of significant efforts and achievements is an integral part of the ethos of the Middle School.

Importantly, the Middle School at Somerville House continues to develop and review its programs, organisation and pedagogical practices in order to maximise the academic, spiritual and social development of its students.
